Why "Karate-do 3D"?
Discipline, Devotion, Determination – The Depth of Karate
After 43 years of practicing karate, I’ve come to see the art not just in its physical form but in its profound depth, encompassing the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life. This insight has led me to the creation of my concept, Karate-do 3D (KD3D), which is built upon three pillars: Discipline, Devotion, and Determination.

The term 3D in KD3D symbolizes both the three core principles and the perspective of seeing karate in three dimensions – going beyond the straight lines often emphasized in traditional Shotokan practice. Karate is not just about linear movements; it is a deep, multifaceted art that resonates on every level of our being. It is a journey into the depths (depth in the literal and metaphorical sense) of self-discovery and martial understanding.

Over these decades, karate has shaped my life so profoundly that it feels in every aspect of who I am today.
With KD3D, my goal is to share the insights, ideas, and lessons I’ve gained throughout my karater journey. This includes the mistakes I’ve made – which I now see as some of my greatest teachers – and the perspectives I’ve developed that might not have been explored in depth by my teachers or other masters, or perhaps just things I missed in my earlier years. But after all, no one is perfect, right?

Every practitioner, teacher has their unique insights, and all are equally valuable. However, I believe karate has so many layers that it’s a lifelong process to uncover its essence. It’s not something that can be fully absorbed in few years of training. Instead, it is an evolving, personal process that requires consistent effort and reflection.

In today’s modern world, there are abundant influences and inspirations to draw from, but this can also become overwhelming. Too many options can lead to confusion. While it is crucial to explore and learn widely, it is just as important to simplify and refine our focus. Ultimately, we must find a path that aligns with our inner selves – one that we trust and that resonates with.

This, I believe, is the true essence of Budo: discovering the Do – the path within yourself. It is a personal journey of growth, development and inspiration. Not only for oneself but for others as well.

For me, karate has become that path. The KD3D represents my commitment to sharing this journey with others, offering perspectives and principles that might inspire practitioners to deepen their understanding of karate, explore its many dimensions, and find their own unique way forward. It’s about understanding that art of karate is not just a physical practice but can be a way of life that continually evolves, enriches, and inspires.

With KD3D, I hope that I can help my students and hopefully reach out and help others navigate during their on practice by offering or sharing guidance, ideas, and inspiration that come not only from my experiences but also from the lessons I continue to learn along the way. Karate-do 3D is an invitation to delve into the depths of karate – not just as a martial art, but as a lifelong process of self-discovery and mastery. Thank you for taking your time to read my introduction and I hope you will enjoy the KD3D and find it to be helpful on your journey to ”be the best karate version of you”.
